Map notes & methodology

This atlas plots each song's Billboard Hot 100 chart peak (or, for the all-time classics, its rank on Billboard's 60th Anniversary Hot 100 All-Time list) at the hometown most commonly cited for its lead artist. Glow size scales with chart performance — bigger glow, bigger hit.

Hometown reflects an artist's most-cited place of origin; several artists are closely associated with more than one city. Genre tags are single-category simplifications of records that often cross genres — Afrobeats and reggae, for instance, are folded into R&B here. Coverage spans the United States plus a growing set of global hits (Canada, UK, South Korea, Australia, Colombia, Nigeria, Brazil, Jamaica) — more countries will be added over time.
